Practical Driving Test

At the beginning of the test you will be required to read a number plate at a distance of 20-20.5 metres (depending on the plate type, since 2001). Before moving off on the test you will be asked one safety check question and another second question on the move. The test will last approximately 40 minutes, consist of driving on a variety of roads including dual carriageways, over a course of about 6.5 miles.

From the 4th December 2017, candidates in all B categories of practical driving tests will have to demonstrate they can manage without intervention by driving independently during the test. This involves driving for about 20 minutes, either following a TomTom sat nav (GPS) or following signposts for approximately 20 minutes on every fifth test the examiner conducts.

Car test candidates (category B) will have to complete one of the four reversing and parking manoeuvre options or one of the two forward parking manoeuvres, (one manoeuvre in total) but in addition may be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise (controlled stop). These will be conducted on one in three tests.

Driving test candidates should aim to make as few driving faults as possible. A high standard of driving is expected and is needed to pass the practical test.

Please note: driving test routes will no longer be published.

DVSA fee £62.00 weekdays; £75.00 weekends (candidates should seek advice from their instructor before booking a test).
